This holiday has been the rainbow holiday….. we have seen so many…. Tells you a lot about the weather, some glorious sunshine and some short, hefty showers. As we sat in the bar last night we had the most beautiful double rainbow followed by a massive downpour.

The weather was wild last night. Pat was convinced the van was going to be blown off the cliff, in the end I was starting to think it may be possible. Even Ernie was bothered …. As you can see….

After a night with not much sleep it was time to get the van sorted and ready to head east along the top coast of Scotland. It was a very scenic journey.

At one point we passed a car with lots of signage on it. It was pulled over at the side of the road, it was the support vehicle for someone doing the NC500 on a unicycle. One of the signs said “caution unicyclist ahead” The people in the car were talking to a person in cycling gear but no unicycle. We never saw the unicyclist, we assumed they may have said goodbye to it and chucked it in a ditch as it was so wild in the winds. We were heading for Dunnet Bay, just passed here is Dunnet Point which is the most northerly point on mainland Britain. It was rather bracing in the gale force winds!

After a wander up to the view point and Ernie at one point being the most northerly dog on mainland Britain having a poo we headed off to the caravan site. It’s another lovely site, set behind Dunnet Bay which is a 2 mile long beach.

After a spot of lunch including some lovely cheese from the Spar in Durness we set off for a walk. We went along the beach for a while but we had enough of gale force winds so we headed into the dunes and over into a fab community forest. Lots of lovely walking and sheltered from the wind.

After a nice rest and some Scottish snacks (shortbread for me and Tunnocks for Pat) we had a wander to the local pub. A nice friendly bar with the same beer as I was enjoying in Durness.

Hopefully the wind has dropped a bit now. At least we don’t have to worry about the van falling off a cliff tonight!
